Airtran Airways And Milwaukee Brewers Unveil Brewers 1

May 17, 2010

MILWAUKEE WI (May 17, 2010) - AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI), and the Milwaukee Brewers today unveiled a custom plane painted with throwback Milwaukee Brewers logos and colors to honor the club’s 40th anniversary and the airline’s partnership with the team.

Dubbed Brewers 1, this one-of-a-kind Boeing 717 will become a fixture in AirTran Airways’ national network of more than 70 destinations. This unique livery will be seen by millions of travelers around the country.

“We’re proud to debut Brewers 1 in Milwaukee today,” said Bob Fornaro, AirTran Airways’ chairman, president and chief executive officer.” AirTran Airways greatly values our partnership with the Brewers and we can think of no better way of displaying that pride than on the side of one of our planes.”

Hall of Fame pitcher Rollie Fingers, mascot Bernie Brewer and team executives were among the VIP guests aboard the aircraft as it made its debut at General Mitchell International Airport after being marshaled in by the Klement’s Famous Racing Sausages.

“AirTran Airways has been a tremendous partner and we are thrilled to have our logos flying side-by-side on this terrific airplane,” said Rick Schlesinger, Milwaukee Brewers’ executive vice president, business operations. “We are looking forward to Brewers 1 representing our organization as it takes off into action.”

Kids from the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee pulled the 120,000 lb. aircraft 20 feet at the premiere event to earn $50,000 for their summer sports program.

“Thanks to AirTran Airways, the children of our community have been able to show just how strong they can be,” said Bob Yamachika, YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee’s president and chief executive officer. “AirTran Airways and the Milwaukee Brewers are both first-class organizations and we are grateful to them both for their long-term commitment to the youth of our community.”

Brewers 1 is the fifth in a series of custom-painted AirTran aircraft and the first affiliated with a Major League Baseball team. In 2009, AirTran Airways unveiled Falcons 1 in Atlanta, Ravens 1 in Baltimore, Colts 1 in Indianapolis and Magic 1 in Orlando to honor the airline’s partnerships with these professional sports teams.

Walker Announces March Passenger Count Is An All-Time Single-Month High For General Mitchell International Airport

May 3, 2010

41.5% Increase Over March 2009

MILWAUKEE WI (May 3, 2010) - Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker announced today that the number of passengers using General Mitchell International Airport in March 2010 set an all-time single-month record. The month’s total of 896,598 passengers was an increase of 41.47 percent over last March’s 633,763 passengers. The total eclipses the previous high month – July 2008 with 821,610 passengers. The March 2010 total marks seven straight months of passenger growth.

The number of passengers for the first quarter of 2010 also is a record at 2,262,597, a 39.57 percent increase over 2009′s 1,621,067 passengers for the same period.

Walker credited flight additions from Southwest, AirTran, Frontier/Midwest and Delta, saying, “In today’s economy, it’s all about the airfare. The added flights and low fares at Mitchell create a competitive situation that results in airfare deals for Wisconsin and northern Illinois passengers.”

Airport Director Barry Bateman said, “Mitchell once again is the fastest-growing airport in the nation. While passenger numbers topped 41 percent growth here in March, nationwide passenger travel rose just 1.4 percent.”

The increase in low-fare air service has attracted more travelers from northern Illinois and the northern Chicago area to use Mitchell for their flights. In addition, Mitchell’s SuperSaver parking lot at $5 a day compares very favorably with parking rates at the other two Chicago airports.

Market Data:
With 48 markets, Mitchell International has moved up to 28th among U.S. airports in number of markets served nonstop, according to data recently published by the Brookings Institute. Mitchell’s rank in a similar 2004 study was 34th. The new ranking means that more nonstop markets are served out of Milwaukee than out of other Midwestern cities, such as Nashville; Pittsburgh; Indianapolis and Columbus, and out of medium-sized cities elsewhere in the U.S., including Portland, OR; Austin; New Orleans; San Diego; Raleigh/Durham; Albuquerque; San Antonio and Hartford, CT.

The average airfare out of Milwaukee was lower than the average at 89 other U.S. airports, according to the latest U.S. Department of Transportation statistics (3rd Quarter 2009). Mitchell’s average fare was about $81 less than O’Hare’s and $60 less than the nation’s average fare.
